Recent advances in hair
restoration surgery
have
resulted in more natural and
aesthetically pleasing
results.
The advent of
micrografting in which
individual or two to three
hair transplants are
used
rather than the previous
technique of
punch
grafting. |
The punch grafts used in the
past were unnatural in
appearance and were telling
of the procedure having been
performed. The micrografts
are virtually invisible as
surgical placements leaving
the scalp natural in
appearance and texture. Post
operative activities are only
restricted for a matter of days
before normal hair care is restored
and there is no need to hide the
grafts as they look like natural
hair growth.
Normal hair shedding involves the
loss of 50-150 hairs per day. Most
hair loss is the result of Male
Pattern Baldness (MPB.) Caused by
the genetic sensitivity of the
follicles of the crown of the scalp
to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) a
breakdown product of the male
hormone testosterone. The hair on
the sides and back of the scalp are
not genetically sensitive to DHT and
are spared..
These
remaining hair follicles not
effected by DHT can be used to
restore the DHT sensitive hair
follicles lost on the crown of the
scalp. Transferring the follicle
does not change their genetic
sensitivity to DHT.
Other
causes of hair loss are relatively
rare and result from chronic
illnesses, stress and traumatic hair
loss like infections, tension from
tight braiding, and burns.
Other
treatments:
Propecia - (Finasteride)
Interferes with the breakdown of
testosterone into DHT. It is
effective in some men, but can in
some patients cause a decrease in
libido and/or impotence. It is taken
by mouth and is useful in higher
concentrations for prostatic
hypertrophy. It is used in men only
as pregnant women may have offspring
with genital abnormalities like
hypospadius if they are exposed to
finasteride.
Rogaine - (Minoxidil) is a
vasodilator that increases blood
flow to the hair follicles and may
be effective in some patients. It is
applied topically twice daily.
Copper - copper is vital
component of hair and decreases with
age. Supplements may or may not be
effective.
The Surgical Procedure
The
procedure is performed with a mild
sedative and local anesthesia. The
patient may either lie down or sit
up and watch television during the
procedure which usually last
approximately three to four hours
for a 1000- 1500 graft procedure.
The cost is $5/graft.
What To Expect After Surgery
Minimal swelling and bruising
Length
Three hours.
Recovery
Three days
